Where Is GMC Made?

Ever wondered where your GMC vehicle is made? While GMC’s headquarter is located in Detroit, Michigan, their cars are born at various plants across North America! Each plant focuses on one or two specific GMC models. Take a look at the following plants and its locations, one of which is where your car is from before making its way to the Austin streets:

  • Fort Wayne Assembly Plant (Roanoke, Indiana, United States) builds the Sierra
  • Arlington Assembly Plant (Arlington, Texas, United States ) builds the Yukon and Yukon XL
  • Lansing Delta Township Assembly Plant (Delta Township, Michigan, United States) builds the Acadia
  • Shreveport Operations (Shreveport, Louisiana, United States) builds the Canyon
  • Wentzville Assembly Plant (Wentzville, Missouri, United States) builds the Savanna
  • CAMI Assembly Plant (Ingersoll, Ontario, Canada) builds the Terrain

Overview of the History of the General Motors Truck Company

Now that you know where GMC is made, let’s learn a bit more about GMC themselves:

  • Max Grabowsky founded Rapid Motor Vehicle Company, which developed some of the world’s first trucks.
  • In 1909, General Motors acquired Rapid Motor, which led to GMC or General Motors Truck Company. This is how GM ends up being who owns GMC.
  • In 1912, the company released the first mass-produced truck and over 22,000 were sold.
  • During WWII, the company became a crucial provider to the U.S. Military, offering as much as 600,000 trucks
