Learn How to Clean Leather Car Seats with Nyle Maxwell GMC

There are a whole lot of GMC models to pick from. Whether you opted for one of the GMC Acadia configurations or Yukon configurations with leather seating surfaces, like the incomparable and ultra-luxurious Denali trim that’s ubiquitous across the new GMC model lineup, if you find yourself wondering how to clean leather car seats, listen up. Here at Nyle Maxwell GMC near Cedar Park, our service experts are going to make plain the oft-misunderstood process of leather seat care.

Here’s How to Clean Leather Car Seats in Just 4 Steps

If you’re looking to breathe new life into old leather, or if you just want to keep your brand new GMC’s leather seating surfaces in prime condition for years to come, you should follow the following leather seat care tips to clean and condition your leather to proper way:

  1. Vacuum your vehicle and leather seats with a soft bristle brush attachment or crevice tool, taking care to remove any damaging debris like sand or dirt in crevices. While seemingly insignificant, this debris can, over time, rub in-between seams, creating rips or excess wear over an extended period of time.
  2. Use a pH-neutral cleaning solution designed for leather from a reputable brand to clean your upholstery of any excess dirt or grime.
  3. Use a microfiber cloth and/or a soft-bristled brush to gently massage your leather seats and lift any embedded stains or dirt. If you have perforated leather, take care not to saturate the seats themselves with liquid or cleaner. Instead, apply to your towel and carefully massage onto the surface.
  4. After you’ve worked the leather in your car significantly, it’s time to wipe off the cleaner with a clean, dry microfiber cloth or terry cloth towel. Move-in circular overlapping motions. Next, apply a leather conditioner. Let the conditioner dry, then buff any excess residue with another clean, dry microfiber cloth or terry cloth towel.

Should I Use Leather Conditioner in My Car?

Yes — using leather conditioner after you’ve cleaned your leather car seats is an essential step of automotive leather seat care! But why exactly should you use a leather conditioner? Similar to how hair conditioner works on the human scalp, leather conditioner provides leather seats with essential oils and moisture. It seals the seats, preventing premature cracking and keeping leather luxurious and supple. Most conditioners also have some degree of UV protection.

What Cleaning Products Should I Use on My Car’s Leather?

If Quickly Cleaning Leather: Use a damp colorless microfiber or gentle terry cloth towel to remove dust.

For a Deeper Clean: You can use warm water with a bit of gentle soap (or, better yet, a specially made leather cleaner) to provide top-notch leather seat care to your vehicle’s upholstery. Check your owner’s manual for recommendations, or contact our service experts. But AVOID using these things at any cost:

  • Harsh household cleaners, detergents, or surfactants
  • Dark clothes or anything that could stain your upholstery
  • Furniture polish
  • Sharp objects that may scratch

More Leather Care Tips

Here are some more helpful tips for how to clean leather car seats you may find helpful:

  1. Keep some leather cleaning solution and a clean microfiber cloth or two in your vehicle. This way, when accidents happen in Austin or Pflugerville while on-the-go, you’ll be ready!
  2. If you have access to a garage, store your vehicle in it. Doing so will help mitigate the effects of UV rays and extreme temperatures — both of which can be a bane to leather seat care and leather longevity.
  3. Try to park in the shade whenever possible, but also away from trees (where bird droppings can etch into your vehicle’s exterior paint).
